Day 16: Peter-ing Out in Prayer

Reflect On: Matthew 26:36-46

“The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak…”

As we have been discussing for the last few days, Jesus asked his closest friends to pray with Him, but they fell asleep. Full bellies, quiet place, late hour, comfortable fire glowing warm sleepy light across their faces, they melted away into dreamland instead of praying. Lets give Peter, James, and John the benefit of the doubt.  I bet they most likely started out with good intentions.  I bet they really wanted to pray with and for Jesus.  I am sure they did not want to disappoint their friend and teacher. No one would want to disappoint Jesus!  But they found that the temptation to sleep was a far greater influence than their resolve to pray.  How often is this the case for us?  How often do our current challenges and temptations overwhelm us, telling us not to pray? Its like we look at our circumstances and focus there instead of on God.  The warmth of the fire or the size of the problem influence us more than His presence.

We need a resolve to pray that is greater than our temptation to sleep!  How do we get that much needed resolve?  I do not know for sure what will work for you, but for me I know that resolve comes when I choose to give my attention to God and others.  I find resolve to pray when I dare to enter into the needs of others and receive as a gift the heart of God for those in need.  I find resolve to pray when I focus on God’s presence. It is much harder to listen than it is to speak.  My resolve to pray comes when I choose to intentionally listen instead of trying to fix things with my words.  To listen I need to give God my attention.

The next time you need to stay awake in prayer, give God and others your attention first and see what happens.

What is a Faith Promise?  Glad you asked!

Just as a missionary is called to the mission field so also are those who partner with them through regular prayers and gifts.  A Faith Promise is the amount of money a ministry partner promises to give to a ministry out of obedience to the leading of Holy Spirit.  It is an amount of money missionaries can count on each month from a specific ministry partner.  Missionaries like us cannot step onto the mission field of their calling without the faith promises of God’s people  who partner to send them. Missionaries cannot go without being sent!
